Water efficiency can vary and depend on different factors such as soil geology, the origin of the water stream, the location of the source and whether there is pollution near the main source. Using the laboratory equipment, the Ammonia Ion Meter allows to study the amount of DOC; turbidity and color present in the sample, as well as other elements present such as total phosphorus, ammonia, hexavalent chromium, total chromium, etc.

It should be noted that this equipment is used by food producers that use water activity, which allows predicting how much the absence of moisture will affect their product, and for the treatment of water intended for human consumption. This innovative device is the perfect size to be handled in the palm of your hand. In addition, it ensures accurate readings across the range, detects and blocks the measurement endpoint and provides details of the electrode performance.

Functions of the Ammonia Ion Meter

The ammonia ion meter electrodes possess membranes sensitive to a particular ion. The moment the electrode contacts the sample in its capsule, a selective and spontaneous force occurs that produces a potential. In this case, the ion meter calculates the amount of ammonia, in units of moles per liter, in parts per million as ammonia, parts per million as nitrogen or any other suitable unit, according to the needs of the laboratory.

To take this measure into account, it is important to consider:

  • The measuring scale, to take into account the concentrations at which the electrode is most sensitive.
  • Temperature, essential in potential measurements. This should be kept constant during measurements.
  • The ionic force, although not responding to the sample concentration but to the ions force, use a power adjuster that does not interfere with the sample to equalize the reading measurement.
  • The pH must be right at a certain level for the ions of interest to be released, since there are cases in which the membranes work at certain pH.

Accordingly, the equipment allows to obtain concentration results regarding the voltage detected by the aforementioned electrode. It evaluates ammonia present in the form of ammonium ions in liquid solutions in a fast, strict, precise and modest way.

Important Foundations for Measuring Water Quality

Every society generates both solid and liquid waste. The liquid fraction of these, called wastewater, is basically the water that is released after it has been contaminated during the different uses for which it has been used. Therefore, if water deposition and stagnation are allowed, the decomposition of the organic element it contains can lead to the generation of large amounts of foul-smelling gases and will cause diseases that inhabit the human intestinal system.

For all this, in an industrialized society, the immediate evacuation of water from the sources of generation is needed, followed by its treatment and elimination. And for this, the electrical method is used, based on a measurement of the ions and its determination must be made with the sample collection, since this parameter suffers great variations over time. Some of the parameters that ammonia ion meters can calculate are:

  • Atmospheric pressure
  • Chlorides and nitrates
  • Conductivity and resistivity
  • pH and dissolved oxygen

It shall also indicate the content of the solution for transporting electric current, which will depend on the presence of ions and their total concentration, their change, valence and relative concentrations, as well as the measuring temperature.

It is important to keep in mind that there are different equipment to measure many schemes. In turn, their choice will depend on the use they will be given in laboratories or industries. Its characteristic is to know the quality of the water; physical and chemical typologies of it.

At Kalstein, as manufacturers, we offer you the Ammonia Ion Meter corresponding to the YR series, which has an automatic reading function, as it detects and blocks the end point of the measurement. In addition, the setup menu allows you to set the number of calibration points, stability criteria, temperature, unit, date and time, etc.
