Description

• Immunoglobulin E (IgE) has a strong affinity for basophils and mast cells, earning it the alternative names reagin or cytophilic antibody. Primarily produced by plasma cells in the lamina propria of the respiratory and digestive tract mucosa, IgE is found in extremely low concentrations in the blood of healthy individuals, constituting about 0.002% of total serum immunoglobulins.
• IgE plays a crucial role in type I allergic reactions. In individuals with allergic predispositions or hypersensitivity, serum IgE levels are significantly elevated compared to normal levels. Therefore, a high serum IgE concentration often indicates the presence of a genetic allergy or type I hypersensitivity.
