Ion meter

First, measurement instruments, which are important and fundamental in laboratories, are equipment that are created to provide a solution for professionals, to monitor their activities.

Existing laboratory instruments include meters, which are used to determine or measure the degree or volume of samples to be studied. In this sense, there are pH meters, responsible for measuring the acidity or alkalinity levels of a solution. Similarly, there are ion counters, which are used to calculate the concentration, not the activity of ions in solutions, through salts, by increasing the ionic strength to facilitate the relationship between the electrode potential and the concentration.

Types of Laboratory Ion Meter a Laboratory May Need

Portable Ion Meter

Measurement of ion concentration or specific ion measurements via an ion meter can be performed on a wide variety of samples such as water, food, beverages, pharmaceuticals and also samples of biological origin. The operation of an ion meter occurs by means of the selective ion electrodes (SII) measuring devices that have a sensitive membrane capable of measuring the ionic activity. They measure the ion concentration determined in a solution using a sensor electrode and a reference electrode.

They work, as we mentioned earlier through ion exchange, where the potential difference generated when the electrode comes in contact with the ion being studied is measured. The specific ion activity is transformed into electrical potential upon contact with the active membrane of the selective ion electrode.
