Using the Microplate Reader to Detect HIV

A microplate reader is a computer that involves different modes of activity and is widely used in the area of research and medicine for the detection of chemical, biological or physical abnormalities of a sample. This instrument allows to carry out a variety of experiments simultaneously, among its main functions are to measure fluorescence, absorbance and luminescence. The ELISA technique requires a microplate reader to detect and diagnose diseases such as hepatitis B, cancer, Covid-19, and HIV, among others.

The human immunodeficiency virus, known by its acronym HIV, is a disease that destroys the immune system by damaging a type of white blood cell called CD4 lymphocytes, which is responsible for fighting infections. Several tests can help determine this condition, including the ELISA test, which is done with the help of a microplate reader. People with HIV infection produce an antigen called p24, even long before antibodies are generated.

HIV Microplate Reader

A microplate reader comes with essential detection instruments, these are the microplates, which are a kind of gradilla containing multiple micro wells in the form of tubes, where they fit about 200 to 300 microliters. The sample is then deposited in these wells and analyzed using the ELISA test, which is a test that detects antigens in the blood. This laboratory test is used to diagnose diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, and immune diseases such as HIV.

HIV is an infectious disease that affects and weakens the immune system. Once weakened by the virus, the body’s defenses give way to the development of certain diseases. HIV can be diagnosed by ELISA with the help of the microplate reader. The microplate generates fibers that light the microplate wells containing the samples. The light emitted passes through the sample, then it is amplified and finally the absorbance is determined.

Microplate reader

The microplate reader is an instrument that allows the detection of physical, biological or chemical phenomena of a sample contained in the titling plates. These plates are rectangular with dimensions of 12.5 cm by 8.5 cm, and are made up of 8 rows and 12 columns, which have 96 small wells in the form of U, V or planes. The columns refer to an absorbance value for different wavelengths, there are also models in which the columns are used to calibrate the wavelength scale, in these cases, they have a holmium oxide filter with absorbance peaks.

The microplate reader is used to read the results of tests performed by ELISA technique, this technique is applied in serology and immunology, allowing to detect antibodies or antigens in the body of an infectious agent, an example of this agent is HIV infection. A microplate reader can minimize and save cost and operating time, allowing users to spend more time analyzing data.
