How is a surgical table divided?

The surgical table, as an essential part of the operating room, is designed to provide safety and comfort to patients who require it, in addition, it is functional for any medical intervention, consisting of a column, the top and the transporter.

Its effective characteristics allow surgeons to perform their role with full security, it has elements that indicate the behavior of each of its parts that interact with its mechanisms, which facilitate the movements of the different positions according to their functions.

The surgical table must be designed to improve the workflow and make things easier for your team, so that the health personnel can fully concentrate on the surgery.

Performance of the Surgical Table

The surgical table performs functions that provide security and comfort within the surgical field, cooperating with mobile mechanisms that fit the surgeon’s needs, such as height, rotation, adjustment, transfer, inclination, among others. It also ensures a better overview of patients. Also, the table padding is important, as it should be soft and radiolucent, allowing the pressure to be distributed optimally. It must be adjusted for each type of operation, so it has a control that regulates its movements, which are:

  • Height adjustment.
  • Side tilt on both sides.
  • Lumbar plaque regulation.
  • Adjusting the legs separately and together.
  • Adjustment of the head plate.

Therefore, it follows, that it is a model table that performs with a set of precise rules, allowing several options. This can be equipped with mechanical limbs, to extend the legs of a patient for various procedures.

In addition, for better control, it has a pedal or remote control that allows to adjust the position of the patient in relation to the surgeon, the inclination of the table (or parts of it), the height.

On the other hand, the central part of the table, known as a column, should be rotated to 360° and leaves enough room for the team’s feet. The top of the table is, thanks to the use of X-ray materials, almost completely radiolucent.

Types of Surgical Tables and Their Structures

There are several types of surgical tables and they are classified into three large groups:

  • General surgical tables: They have a fixed height, generally the most used in all health centers.
  • Orthopedic tables: They are stable, and slightly lower, ideal for surgical operations of bones and joints.
  • Radiolucide imaging tables: Allows X-rays and other imaging tools to pass through the table surface so that images can be captured easily.

All tables are set to support people of quite a weight. On the other hand, the tables have different structures, which are:

  • It makes it easy for surgeons and nurses to adjust the width of the bar so that it doesn’t overhang or cause discomfort during surgery using the adjustable width bar.
  • It allows the monitor to be placed during surgery without complicating patient safety through the accessibility of the monitor.
  • Using the head restraint, ensure the patient for comfortable position for surgery.
  • It is easy to maintain

These structures optimize the patient’s comfort and keep them safe for a long procedure. In addition, surgeons can use these functions without difficulty. The surgical tables, bring improvements, for the system of transfer of patients, since usually, the tables are firmly secured to the ground.
